Ben Drowned route: the basement, his consoles and his door
Last updated:
Ben lives in the basement and does not want you there. He keeps his TVs and games down there and calls it his lair. To meet him in Chapter 2 you have to go to the basement and interact with the console on the floor — that is a documented trigger, not scenery. He is one of the six full routes.
Like Jeff and Eyeless Jack, his Chapter 2 content opens if you refuse the proxy offer at the end of Chapter 1.
The basement and the consoles
Searches about "the console in the basement" are really about Ben. Two separate things are going on:
- In Chapter 2, click it. Players documenting his route are consistent: "to meet Ben u must go to the basement and interact with the game on the floor." Skipping it is also a reported reason the Chapter 2 clean-up sequence with Slenderman will not move on. See the stuck checklist.
- You do not pick it up. The TVs and consoles stay in his lair. There is no confirmed inventory item for them, and claims about a glitched cartridge behind a TV that you click three times come from spam walkthroughs, not from this game.
- He keeps everyone else out. As one character puts it, "Ben never lets us come down to the basement" — with all the TVs and equipment, he doesn't want anything broken. That is why the Chapter 3 party down there horrifies him.
Decorating Ben's basement in Chapter 3
Laughing Jack's decorating job includes the basement, which means walking into Ben's space with a box of party supplies. When you get there:
- He asks what you think you're doing, and offers to help only in a sarcastic, unhelpful way.
- Click the box to decorate the scene, as in the other rooms.
- Afterwards he tells you that you have somehow made the basement look worse, says he should be angry that you ruined his lair, and lets it slide because you tried so hard. He also threatens to whack you with his axe one of these days.
It's a good-natured scene rather than a fail state. Full sequence on the decorating guide.
Getting into Ben's room
"How do I open Ben's door" is a frequent search, especially from Spanish-speaking players. The basement door itself is the way down and opens normally during the decorating sequence — you open it and go down the stairs carrying the box.
Not yet confirmed: Whether there is a separate locked Ben door elsewhere in the house that needs a specific item, distinct from the basement stairs. We only publish route details we can trace to the developer or to recorded gameplay, so this section will be updated rather than filled in with guesses. If you have a save file that proves otherwise, the Hahadit's official itch.io page comment thread is the fastest place to settle it.
Worth noting for comparison: Laughing Jack's room is locked during the decorating sequence, and you can hear him laughing and talking to himself through it. Players sometimes mix the two up.
What Ben's route is not
Ben attracts a lot of invented walkthrough content, probably because the original Ben Drowned ARG is so well documented. Creepy Dates does not have an arcade you visit on a specific evening, a glitched cartridge item, a Majora's Mask statue puzzle, or numbered relationship thresholds. Those all come from fan pages describing a game that doesn't exist.
Common mistakes on Ben's route
Ben's route is the one most buried under invented content, because the original Ben Drowned ARG is so famous that fan sites import its puzzles wholesale. Here is what actually goes wrong for players, and none of it involves a cartridge.
Skipping the basement console
Clicking the console on the basement floor is how you meet Ben in Chapter 2, and skipping it is a reported reason the Chapter 2 clean-up sequence with Slenderman refuses to move on. If your game feels stalled after the early house phase, check whether you ever went down there. The stuck checklist covers this and the other common stalls.
Trying to pick the consoles up
The TVs and consoles are scenery in Ben's lair, not inventory items. There is no glitched cartridge behind a TV and no three-click hidden object — that claim comes from spam walkthroughs describing a game that does not exist. Click the console once to meet him and leave the hardware where it is.
Importing ARG puzzles that are not in this game
To be explicit: Creepy Dates has no arcade visit, no Majora's Mask statue puzzle, no numbered relationship thresholds. If a guide describes any of those, close the tab. Everything confirmed about Ben is on this page and traceable to the developer or recorded gameplay.
Worrying about decorating his basement
The Chapter 3 decorating sequence sends you into Ben's lair with a box of party supplies, and his sarcastic reaction — plus the axe threat — reads as a problem but is not one. It is a good-natured scene with no fail state. Click the box, let him complain, and take the character moment for what it is. The full sequence is on the decorating guide.
Confusing his door with Laughing Jack's
During the decorating window, one locked door has laughter behind it — that is Laughing Jack's room, not Ben's. Ben's basement opens normally when the sequence sends you down with the box. No special item has been documented for either door.
As always: save at each chapter start and when you enter a new location. Chapter-boundary saves are what let you replay the basement-first path versus a decorating-window path without redoing the forest and Chapter 1.
Frequently asked questions
Should I get the console in the basement?
Yes — interact with the console on the basement floor. That is how you meet Ben in Chapter 2, and skipping it can stall the clean-up sequence. It is not an inventory item you pick up.
How do I open Ben's door?
The basement door opens normally when the decorating sequence sends you down with the box. No special item has been documented for it.
Does Ben get angry if I decorate the basement?
He complains, says you made it look worse, and threatens you with his axe — then lets it slide because you were trying to help. It is not a fail state.
