How to finish the decorating job Jack gives you

Last updated:

You decorate three places in Creepy Dates: the hallway, the living room and the basement. In each scene, click the box of decorations. Once all three are done, the Chapter 3 sequence ends on its own — there is no way to refuse the job, and no fourth room hidden somewhere.

If it feels like the game will not let you stop, you have almost certainly not done the basement. Ben is down there and people often back out of that room.

Why you are decorating at all

Laughing Jack corners you in Chapter 3 and asks for help decorating the CreepyHouse because Slenderman's brothers are visiting. He hands you balloons, garlands and signs, tells you he will "prepare my best jokes" instead of helping, and vanishes before you can argue. Your character is not thrilled about it.

His instructions are specific: just decorate the living room, the hallways, and the basement. That list is the whole task.

The three locations

1. The hallway

Where you start, holding an armful of decorations. Click the box to decorate. You will end up taping garlands to the wall and putting up balloons, and the game lets your character grumble about them coming out crooked.

2. The living room

Same mechanic. Click the box to decorate the scene.

3. The basement

The one people miss. Open the basement door and go down the stairs carefully so you don't drop the box. Ben is there playing a video game and will be sarcastic about it — he offers to help in a way that is clearly not helping. Click the box to decorate. Afterwards he tells you that you managed to make the basement look worse than before, says he should be angry that you ruined his lair, and lets it go because you tried. More on him on the Ben Drowned page.

Explore between rooms

The game tells you directly: if you explore the house, you might find hidden conversations. During this sequence that is unusually rewarding, because most of the cast is standing around waiting for the party. Things worth doing:

  • Jeff's room — he is out. Take the burned family photo; showing it to Nina unlocks Jeff's backstory.
  • Nina's room — Polaroids of Jeff, a Jeff plush, and talk about Splendorman being fun.
  • Clockwork — she actually helps you decorate, and she warns you not to trust Laughing Jack.
  • Laughing Jack's room — locked. You can hear him laughing and talking to himself through the door.
  • Masky and Hoodie's shelf — video tapes, plus a camera that breaks if you try to use it. When they confront you, you can tell the truth, lie, or say nothing.

"I have explored everything — now what?"

This is a common dead end, and it usually has one of three causes:

  1. An undone decorating spot. Re-walk the hallway, living room and basement and look for a box you have not clicked.
  2. A room you have not physically entered. Progress often depends on entering a location, not on exhausting dialogue. Your own room, Nina's room and the basement are the usual culprits.
  3. An actual soft lock. A few players have reported not being able to leave their own room after entering it, having clicked everything. If you are stuck like that, reload your last save; if it persists, it belongs in the bug report form linked from Hahadit's official itch.io page.

Note that "explore everything" is not a completion requirement. The optional conversations are bonuses, not gates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I finish the decorating job in Creepy Dates?

Finish all three locations — hallway, living room and basement — by clicking the box in each scene. The sequence ends on its own once the basement is done.

Which rooms do you have to decorate in Creepy Dates?

Laughing Jack asks for the living room, the hallways and the basement. Nothing else is required.

Can you refuse to decorate in Creepy Dates?

No. Laughing Jack leaves before you can argue and the sequence proceeds regardless.

Why won't the decorating sequence end in Creepy Dates?

Check for an unclicked decorating box, and for a room you have not entered — progress is often gated on entering a location rather than on dialogue. If you are genuinely stuck in place, reload your last save.
